On a strategic situation where the Valley comes out to Lake Ceresio, perhaps Osteno, once upon a time a fortified borough, is named from the Latin word "ostium" (door). Both districts retain Medieval traces in the doorways, in the two parish churches (St. Vincent and St. Peter and Paul, the latter well-known for the marble Madonna by Andrea Bregno), in the frescoed strong-houses and the low porches. At the mouth of Osteno built-up area you can admire the Orrido della Pescara, a long meander-like ravine created by the waterfall of the Telo stream, one of the two homonymous streams (the other flows at Argegno) that perhaps gave name to the Valley (Intelvi "inter Teluis"). At 4 km towards Porlezza, near a shore wild but endowed with campings and inns, there are the famous Grotte di Rescia, charming caverns flowered with stalactites and stalagmites near a quarry of tufa, used in the past century for "rocaille" decorations.
